INVESTING IN TRANSPORT - WHO PAYS? IN: URBAN TRANSPORT
The paper considers policies for investing in urban transport in Great Britain over the last 100 years, with particular reference to public transport. The key investment periods are identified in terms of the mode of focus and the principal source of investment. One of the most notable features is the continual addition of new transport infrastructure which has occurred alongside the retention of existing facilities. These additional facilities have produced an overlay of alternative modes for passenger services which in urban areas have contributed to the existence of increasingly complex travel patterns over far greater distances than was previously the case. The contributions of these different modes of urban transport are examined.
