BICYCLE USE PLUNGES: THE STRUGGLE FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN CHINA'S CITIES
This article describes the changes in China's transportation policy and international business sector that have led to increases in private automobile use and ownership and a corresponding decrease in bicycle use, and the environmental effects these shifts are likely to cause. These policy changes have led to an increase in restrictions on bicycle use on some roads and highways, and removal of some bicycle paths in high-traffic urban areas. The increase in dependence on motor vehicle use is likely to have severe negative impacts on air pollution and greenhouse gas emission estimates, as well as on the health of residents in urban areas in China.
