SEISMIC RETROFIT DETAILS OF THE 1927 CARQUINEZ BRIDGE

Seismic retrofit design of the Carquinez Bridge is nearing completion as part of the California Department of Transportation's (Caltrans) state wide seismic retrofit program. With a main span of 1100 ft and constructed in 1927 from built-up riveted laced members, retrofit of the Carquinez Main Spans provided many challenges. This paper focuses on the retrofit methods and details used to either increase the displacement capacity of the deficient bridge components or strengthen them to meet seismic demands. Details illustrate the concept of introducing fuses at specific locations in the structure to project joints, members, or entire frames.
