THE REASONS FOR LIME STABILIZATION OF SOILS

'N BESPEKING VAN DIE REDES WAAROM KELKSTABILISASIE PLAASVIND

The report discusses why lime is able to improve the physical properties of clayey soils. It briefly describes some of the background knowledge and points out that the improvements take place in two phases, first rapid amelioration and then cementation. The rapid amelioration is due to physical changes which make the material less clay-like. Cementation causes the increase in strength and is the result of a chemical reaction between the clay and lime.(a) /TRRL/
