NEW LIGHT SOURCES WILL SAVE ENERGY
The author examines the relative merits of the three main methods of saving energy. Switching out units and reducing lighting in the early morning period are not considered to be satisfactory methods since any form of reduction in street lighting increases accidents. Often the cost of accidents exceeds the additional cost of all-night lighting. The author gives examples of the benefits to be gained in the conversion of tungsten filament lamps to high or low pressure sodium. The relative power consumption of several types of light source are compared. By phasing the conversion programme to the normal group-lamp change period, the cost of new lamps may be minimised. Further benefits can be gained by using the most efficient design of lantern and control gear. A table is used to illustrate the range of power losses produced by four different makes of control gear. /TRRL/
