A VIDEO TAPE RECORDING SYSTEM FOR TRAFFIC DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

This article describes a portable videotape-recording system which has been used by the author to collect and analyse data relating to various traffic characteristics. Particular features of the system are a digital time base which can be superimposed onto the video recording either in the field at the time of recording or subsequently in the laboratory and a slow-motion playback facility which is used for accurate measurement of short time intervals between successive events. A comparison is made, in terms of both performance and cost, with the more familiar technique of time-lapse photography and the advantages/disadvantages of the two alternative systems are discussed.
