FODEN-NC DOUBLE-DECK BUS
Although the design of the Foden-nc integral construction, rear-engined double-deck bus is of conventional pattern, it is aimed at simplification to reduce maintenance to a minimum. The rust-proofed steel body has an overall length of 9.499 M on a wheelbase of 5.105M9 Power is provided by a 172bhp gardner 6lxb diesel engine mounted in a high transverse position. The bus incorporates an allison MT640 heavy-duty gearbox, the drive then continuing through a level drive gear box to turn the transmission through 90 deg. A unique feature is the first commercial application of the Ferodo retarder which is automatic in operation and works in conjunction with the existing braking system. The bus is designed to carry a 75-seater body with 16 standees and meets the DOE 28 deg tilt test with an upper deck load equal to 43 passengers. /TRRL/
