GRID REFERENCE CODING: APPLICATION TO TRANSPORTATION STUDIES

The development of transportation models relies heavily on the availability of trip origin and destination data referenced to a traffic zone system. The coding of such data by zone number restricts the subsequent use made of the data since it cannot be reused for an amended or alternative zone system without considerable reprocessing. An alternative method of referencing data to a zone independent system, by using the national grid, is proposed in this paper and the procedures available to aggregate such data to any traffic zone system are described. By adopting such procedures considerable cost and time savings can be achieved in the reuse of survey data for different zone systems. (A) /TRRL/
