MULTI-MODAL FREIGHT AND PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION: THE CHALLENGES AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

The paper follows through two potential user experiences; a 'good' one and a 'bad' one, and understands the difficulties which the traveller/consignor will experience. It proposes a series of Telematic solutions and services which would both keep quality of the user experience in control and improve the support which the main providers and supporters of the domains give. Key solutions will include: (a) 'network user' interfaces and aids to improve the quality for the traveller/consignor from planning to completion of either a 'good' or a 'bad' experience; (b) integrated dynamic scheduling tools which help operators and network providers to combine faster, better transits with flexibility to change and dependability in the face of the unexpected; and (c) asset monitoring, sustainment and improvement tools which enable providers to expect 100% reliability. The paper concludes with an assessment of the opportunities for new and re-invented products and services and the technologies which may be needed to enable them to be successful and viable.
