MANAGEMENT OF BRIDGE MAINTENANCE - A LOCAL AUTHORITY PERSPECTIVE

The county of Surrey in the south-east of England has one of the highest population densities in the UK. As a consequence, the county road network carries over twice the national average traffic flows. This paper describes the background to and development of a bridge management system for the county. The bridge management team makes extensive use of computing technology but it is emphasised that the system does not take decisions about the bridge stock away from the engineer.
