THE STRENGTH OF DETERIORATED REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGES
This paper summarises a project carried out by WS Atkins Consultants Ltd for the Highways Agency (Mr Sibdas Chakrabarti) to carry out model testing leading to the production of an Advice Note and Technical Memorandum giving guidance on the assessment of reinforeed concrete bridge structures. The scope of the project principally covered concrete structures subject to carbonation and chloride attack, resulting in reinforcement corrosion and delamination of cover. It excluded prestressed and lightweight concrete and members subject to alkali-silica reaction and thaumasite attack. Following a desk study of reasons for deterioration and a literature search covering previous work carried out into the strength of deteriorated reinforced concrete structures, the laboratory testing was carried out by Professor Paul Regan at Westminster University. For the covering abstract see ITRD E106406.
