CANADIAN CG DEVELOPS ACV ICEBREAKING TECHNIQUE

A small Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, the Alexander Henry, pushing a bow-mounted air cushion platform in the Thunder Bay area of Lake Superior, demonstrated that she can clear a path through ice up to 17 inches thick while travelling continuously at a speed of 9 knots. A Voyageur air cushion vehicle demonstrated its ability to break ice up to 2 feet thick at speeds as high as 20 knots. This article summarizes the accomplishments and experiments in icebreaking technology.
