START ON LARGEST RWIS : A NEARLY 50 YEAR-OLD TURNPIKE IS BEING COMPLETELY INSTRUMENTED FOR MODERN WEATHER SURVEILLANCE

This article describes a road weather information system (RWIS) which is ready for implementation on the entire length of the New Jersey Turnpike. The system will monitor three key elements: changes in weather, visibility problems, and road surface conditions. Thirty RWIS sites will be located along the turnpike, with each site having its own remote processing unit for receiving and processing real-time weather information and transmitting it to the turnpike's traffic operation center.
