The proposed paper will first describe ZAG VP Longitudinal Profilometer, which was developed at Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute (ZAG). ZAG - VP profilometer is used for measuring longitudinal profile of pavement surfaces, a parameter which significantly effect safety, riding comfort and also economy of both road users and road authorities. Results of the measurement is actual longitudinal profile of pavement surface as a function of distance. From this profile ITI (International Roughness Index) values can be calculated. Measurements are carried out at the speed up to 120 km/h according to the road category and surface condition. Within the project, Measuring of Longitudinal Evenness on National Roads, which was supported by Directorate of Roads, Republic of Slovenia measurements on approximately 5000 kilometers were done. During that period there were no problems with the device, despite the fact that some measurements were carried out under bad weather conditions. Although more than twenty different indices are used for assessing longitudinal evenness, the project started assessing road evenness with IRI index, which had already been used by Directorate of Roads, Republic of Slovenia. We found out various levels of road evenness in Slovenia. Given the circumstances, the IRI roughness scale suggested by World Bank technical paper no. 46 was modified. The first task for the measurements was to find out the level of road evenness on national roads. At the same time were establishing the procedure for evaluation of measured results on network level, which is of greater interest to the decision makers and budget directors, and of course on project level, which is of greater interest to the technical staff. The results are used to define decision rules for in service pavements. Last but not least, the results are used to define specifications for new pavements and to define criteria for maintaining in service pavements.
