MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS IN LONG-TERM STRENGTH AND TOUGHNESS OF GLASS-FIBER REINFORCED CONCRETE

It is well known that glass fiber cement composites may suffer a loss of strength and toughness when exposed to natural environments. This paper discusses CEM-FIL Star mix that was developed some ten years ago and has now acxhieved worldwide experience. It is based on using alkali resistance (AR) glass fiber with a specific type of manmade, and therefore controllable, pozzolanic material, metakaolin, with portland cement matrix. This reacts in a controllable way with the liberated lime, thus eliminating the main reason for the embrittlements of glass fiber reinforced concrete with lime. By reacting with and removing this lime, long term properties are improved.
