SIMULATION TEST TOOL FOR VALIDATION OF SPEED AND DISTANCE ON-BOARD COMPONENT OF THE EUROPEAN TRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM

The paper describes a simulation test tool developed for the validation of the positioning system component called Speed and Distance Measurement Unit (SDMU), in the framework of the European Train Control System project. The positioning information delivered by the SDMU, critical to the supervision of the train and thus to its safety, should fulfill requirements in terms of dependability. Therefore, to be considered as safe, it should be validated with regard to specifications. The tool proposed comprises a complete simulation environment including functional modules dedicated to the simulation of train and motion, track, sensors, and disturbances, and also a module to simulate relevant functions of the onboard computer. The purpose of the tool was to validate the SDMU before onboard integration. The use of sophisticated simulation models allows one to reduce the costs of testing. The test tool proposes to combine simulation models, to tune test parameters so as to simulate either normal or critical circumstances, and in each case, to observe and quantify the reaction of the SDMU. Therefore, the methodology proposed to meet the testing objectives is based on a modular configuration of the simulation elements and a graphical display and statistical analysis of the simulation results. A typical test session consists in defining scenarios and test cases according to the testing configuration, in launching simulation, and getting simulation results. The interactive analysis tool allows statistical and graphical exploitation of the results: detection of failures, explanation of failure occurrences, and quantification of the SDMU performances in terms of accuracy, reliability, and safety.
