NEW BOOK ON THE HISTORY OF WATER CONTROL IN THE BAYOUS
A recently published book, "Designing the Bayous: The Control of Water in the Atchafalaya Basin, 1800-1995," describes and analyzes the history of water control and water-policy development conducted for the Atchafalaya Basin. The book illustrates the useful role of historical analysis in assessing the broader considerations associated with large hydraulic-engineering undertakings, and in assessing the effectiveness of various consequent hydraulic-engineering actions. The book tells the history of efforts to reconcile conflicting, changing, and often overlapping objectives in using the basin's water. This forum article provides a brief overview of the book's approach to the history of water control in the Atchafalaya Basin.
