FIGHTING TRAFFIC WITH TECHNOLOGY
Modern life demands growing mobility. This mobility is increasingly provided by private cars, but this freedom is reduced by chronic traffic congestion. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) can help reduce congestion by applying communications and information technology to the problem. Whether offering real-time data about traffic conditions, online information for trip planning, or even self-driving cars, these systems increase safety and reduce travel. This article provides an overview of current types of ITS and offers some suggestions as to what they might be able to achieve in the future.
