KEYS TO SUPERPAVE SUCCESS

This article shows how Superpave has dramatically improved hot mix asphalt (HRA) technology, even though it is not yet perfect. This was the consensus of experts at a recent conference on Superpave. Speakers emphasised that Superpave is the best mix design available, but that mix design alone cannot guarantee pavement performance. One of them said that improvement of ride, joint construction, and compaction, with reduced segregation, must be emphasised. Another stressed the importance of a continuous flow of material, to improve pavement smoothness; he also recommended the use of a mobile reference device (ski) to improve longitudinal joint construction. A third speaker said that there are so many Superpave mixes available that it there is no reason not to use Superpave on every job. Several speakers commented on problems that asphalt suppliers face due to proliferation of binder grades, and urged state, local, and commercial asphalt users to work together to reach consensus on the most important performance-graded (PG) grades to be specified in their geographical area. Aggregate suppliers said that they also face problems, when some of their customers are working with Superpave but others are not; aggregate production needs to be consistent. The current equipment specifications need to be revised.
