THE ALTERATION OF WIDE SINGLE CARRIAGEWAY BRIDGES TO PROVIDE CYCLEWAYS
Bridges tend to be the pinch points on cycle networks. This report is a study of best practice with regard to the architectural and landscape issues associated with the provision of cycleways on wide single carriageway bridges. The study examines the general implications of providing cycleways on bridges with an emphasis on the visual appearance of making alterations to bridges. An approach is sought whereby typical measures are informed by varied approaches appropriate to the contextural issues of each site. Typical scenarios are explored and general arrangements and details considered. In general the recommendations provided derive from the best of internationally published guidance plus studies of built examples in Denmark, the Netherlands and Britain. The study aims to give guidance for designers on the best practice in providing cycleways on bridges. (A)
