AN INTEGRATED UTCS/AVM POLLUTION CONTROL SYSTEM

This paper describes a pollution control system that is based on automatic vehicle monitoring (AVM) integrated with an Urban Traffic Control System (UTCS). Fixed and mobile sensors are used in the monitoring of congestion and pollution. The paper first describes pollution and congestion monitoring systems. Features of the AVM and UTCS are described. Techniques regarding pollution control and flow reduction are discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion regarding the implementation of the proposed system in Trieste, Italy.
