USING ITS TO IMPROVE BUS OPERATIONS : EXAMPLES AND OPPORTUNITIES
In this paper, the authors review the primary achievements of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) on bus operations in the U.K. and Europe. The five main applications are studied: 1) bus priority in advanced control systems; 2) Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) systems for passenger information, bus priority, and fleet management; 3) automatic camera enforcement systems; 4) automatic ticketing systems; and, 5) variable message signs. Applications which show substantial progress are described. Applications in which the contribution of ITS is less well-established are discussed and suggestions for improvement are offered.
