ITS DEVELOPMENT AND DEPLOYMENT IN JAPAN

In this paper, the authors present a history of the development and deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in Japan. It discusses the various national programs and the current status of ITS. Information is given on different projects, including: Comprehensive Automobile Control System (CACS), the Road Automobile Communication system (RACS), the Advanced Mobile Traffic Information and Communication System (AMTICS), the Universal Traffic Management System (UTMS), the Vehicle Information Communication System (VICS). Electronic toll collection systems are also briefly covered.
