LATERAL LOAD RESISTANCE OF DIAPHRAGMS IN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE GIRDER BRIDGES
The effectiveness of reinforced concrete and steel intermediate diaphragms in dissipating and distributing the energy from lateral loading of prestressed concrete (PC) girder bridges is being investigated. Finite element analyses of PC girder bridges with various configurations of intermediate diaphragms are being made. Various diaphragm configurations will be tested in a full scale, simple span, PC girder bridge model containing three beams. The approximate span and width of the bridge model are 40 and 18 feet, respectively. The test bridge will be subjected to both horizontal and vertical loading. Although the majority of the loading cases will be static loads, several dynamic load applications are planned.
