RE-INVENTING PUBLIC TRANSIT IN CANADA: WHY JITNEY BUSES NEED A FARE CHANCE
Canadian public transit systems, in general, are facing a double-edged sword in the form of a trend decline in their ridership base and trend increase in operational and capital costs. This paper examines the performance of Canadian transit systems in terms of their initiatives to achieve efficiency gains. Recognizing that the real problem facing public transit is demand responsiveness, the paper examines the validity of a neglected alternative to public transit - the owner operated bus, or what might be called the jitney bus.
