THE FUTURE OF PRAIRIE BRANCHLINES AND SHORT LINE RAILWAYS

Railways are abandoning branch lines and elevator companies are consolidating to fewer delivery points in the hope of achieving productivity gains through cost reductions and improved economies of scale. In Canada, the Prairie Provinces, municipal governments, grain producers and other local interests are concerned about these rapid changes, particularly the abandonment of branchlines. This paper examines what has happened so far vis-a-vis the abandonment of rail network on the Prairies and tries to identify trends in the future.
