AUTOMATED MARSHALLING YARDS UTILIZING LINEAR INDUCTION MOTOR

Automation of yard operations is a major problem for many of the world's railways in the course of modernizing freight movement. To control the speed of cars on yard tracks, the JNR has developed a system of linear induction motors that was put in service in September 1974, achieving for the first time a complete automation of yard operation. This article presents briefly the system and describes the installations of linear motors for acceleration and deceleration of cars.
