TYRES IN THE ENVIRONMENT: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In the U.K., some 440 billion motor vehicle kilometers are traveled by road each year, and approximately 65% of goods are transported by road as well. In 1996, there more than 121 million tires in use and, with projected increases in road traffic, by 2021 tire numbers may reach 200 million. This report was written in an effort to compile information about tires to assess their impact on the environment and to identify what can be done to minimize their impact in the future. The environmental stresses that tires can cause are many and are described in detail including those relating to traffic noise and air/water pollution caused by tire deterioration/erosion and the dispersion of particulate matter of rubber and other chemical substances.
