THE TRANSPORT DIRECTORATE - WELSH NORTH - SOUTH TRANSPORT LINKS STUDY - TRANSPORT STRATEGY - EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report presents a study providing a comprehensive review of all transport options for improving north-south transport links in Wales; it includes rail and road route maps of Wales. The study was also required to develop a strategy and priorities to improve some sections of four trunk roads, and assess the adequacy of existing service facilities along north-south routes. The methodology of the study covered: (1) consultations with trunk road agents, local authorities, major transport operators, transport users, and other interested bodies; (2) collection of data about road, bus, and rail travel; (3) examination of the existing situation; (4) assessment of likely changes in demand and provision of services; (5) specification and assessment of policy options; and (6) prioritisation of transport improvements. One road option and two rail options were rejected as impracticable. The proposed highway improvement schemes are local schemes, and allow for environmental issues, accessibility, and local transport needs. Several specific schemes are proposed, together with general improvement of facilities for lorry drivers. In public transport, recommendations were made to reroute some existing train services, improve interchange of services and modes, and study a route for a north-south coach service.
