ORESUND - THE FIXED LINK - A SPECIAL PUBLICATION

This publication describes the main aspects of building the Oresund Fixed Link between Demark and Sweden, in commemoration of its opening on 1 July 2000. The introduction explores the project's background and highlights. The Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Oresundsbro Konsortiet (SOK), explains how the Link was conceived and how it will be a catalyst for strong economic growth in the region around Copenhagen and Malmoe. The Ministers of Trade for Denmark and Sweden visualised the Link's benefits. The remainder of the publication covers: (1) how much the project cost, and how much finance was provided by the EU and the Danish and Swedish Governments; (2) the unique form of design-and-construct project management used; (3) the project's work on enhancing the environment; (4) how an initially sceptical public was informed about the land works in several unusual ways; (5) the technical and management challenges presented by the dredging and reclamation work; (6) the careful planning of the Link's tunnel; (7) the design and construction of the Link's large cable-stayed bridge; (8) making, placing, and surfacing the massive bridge deck elements; (9) blending the Danish and Swedish rail system to link them; (10) using a special model to forecast traffic flow; (11) safety management; and (12) new technologies used.
