LAST UNITS OF A SERIES OF THREE VERSATILE DOUBLE-HULLED STANDARD CARGO SHIPS, KIRSTEN SMITS AND MARTINUS SMITS COMMISSIONED

The Kirsten Smits, which is the only one of the sister ships discussed, is designed for the carriage of all types of dry cargo--from long, bulky, and heavy cargoes to containers and bulk consignments. She was recently handed over to her owners by De Groot en Van Vliet, Scheepswerf en Maschinenfabriek B.V., Slikkerveer, Holland. Built to the requirements of Lloyd's Register of Shipping, the Kirsten Smits has one unobstructed cargo hold within the double hull, with hatches consisting of 18 transverse sections hydraulically operated by means of a hydrometer and an endless chain. The cargo hold is fitted with mechanical ventilation, capable of 20 air changes an hour. Principal particular are: Length, o.a. - 84.35 m; b.p. - 74.436 m; Breadth, mld - 14.3 m; Depth, to freeboard deck - 6.640 m; Draught, Summer - 6.321 m; Gross tonnage - 1,599; Deadweight, Summer - 3,700 t; Main machinery - Smit-Bolnes type 308 HDK; Dieasel engine, 2,500 hp at 250 rpm; Complement - 12. A set of general arrangement diagrams covering both ships is included.
