CURRENT PRACTICE OF APPLICATION OF TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES AT FREEWAY LANE DROPS

The questionnaire is presented and the results are summarized of a survey of highway agencies on two major aspects: the sequence of signs and/or pavement markings used in delineating various lane drop configurations; and the signing and/or marking standards and related accident data. The 34 responses to Case 1 - Lane dropped away from the influence of an interchange were so diverse that no consensus of practice is apparent. The 36 responses to Case II - lane dropped within an interchange area with no escape lane provided - were not as diverse. Comments are also made on responses to Case III - lane dropped within an interchange with an escape lane provided. Further questions dealt with the exit only panel on overhead guide signs, other traffic control devices used in freeway lane drop situations; accident rates at freeway or interchanges containing a lane drop; and other freeway lane drop situations.
