EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF MULTIPHALTE 35/50 ON THE A83 DURING THE FIRST 10 YEARS SERVICE

In 1987, the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) organised a road trial on behalf of the UK's Highways Agency (HA), which was supported by several road construction industry associations and companies. Ten trial sections of hot-rolled apshalt (HRA) were laid on a stretch of the A38 trunk road, using a range of binders including Shell's Cariphalte DM and Multiphalte 35/50. Since the trial sections were laid, both the TRL and Shell Research have regularly inspected the trial sections to monitor their performance. This report compares the performance of HRA wearing courses, made with Multiphalte 35/50 and conventional 50 pen during the first decade of their expected 20-year life. For both binders, the HRA wearing course used was a 30/14 HRA designed to have a stability of 6 plus or minus 2 kN using 50 pen bitumen; the target binder content was 7.2%. The 100m trial section of Multiphalte 35/50 was successfully laid 50mm thick in December 1987 in bad weather. The measurements made on the trial stretches were deformation (rut depth), texture depth, and visual condition. The laboratory tests on the asphalts measured the stiffness and yield strain of extracted cores, and the properties of recovered binder cores. The wearing course, using Multiphalte 35/50, is performing very well, considerably better than the 50 pen material.
