Comments are made on the constant moduli of deformation for the shells of high dams. It is noted that when using nonlinear moduli to input corresponding nonlinear Poisson's ratio. In a well compacted gravel at high confining pressurs, the material exhibits marked dilatancy well before the shear stresses aproach failure. For the sand and gravel at Mica when dilating, the Poisson's ratio would be in the range 0.5-1.0. It is suggested that the greater stress transfer computed in the Mica analysis came about because Poisson's ratio in the shells was allowed to increase with build up of mobilized shear stress.
