MULTI-DAY AND MULTI-PERIOD DATA. IN: TRANSPORT SURVEY QUALITY AND INNOVATION
This chapter reviews the reasons for moving from standard, one day, trip based surveys to multi-day and multi-period data. The basic reason given is the need to develop the temporal dimension in data. The periodicity of events is seen to help define an appropriate time unit for the measurement of changes. In the case of multi-day data, a six weeks travel diary and a survey based on the frequency of trips are presented and compared with trip-based approach. The advantages of sampling on several occasions and its consequences for producing an optimized calculation of time series values is shown for multi-period data. Also considered is the possibility of building a new method for data collection that allows both continuous data collection and longitudinal measurement of changes in behavior between time periods.
