MULTI-LINGUAL AND MULTI-CULTURAL CONDITIONS. IN: TRANSPORT SURVEY QUALITY AND INNOVATION

The chapter reports on a workshop whose participants had experience in investigation of minority or immigrant communities in European countries and the United States and linguistically diverse countries such as South Africa. Some of the recommendations included: need to investigate and refine methodologies on the challenges encountered in transport surveys in developing countries and on appropriate techniques for such surveys; improvements in survey methods; development of pretesting and pilot studies; careful definition of a household; attention should be given to issues of language translation that adopts cultural sensitivity to accuracy and equivalency; careful selection and training of interviewers.
