EMD SD70M
This article offers a detailed look at the most widely used models of locomotives produced by Electro-Motive Division, which is the SD70M family, a multi-purposed D.C-drive locomotive, representing close to 60% of the North American freight orders for D.C. drive locomotives. Overall, General Electric's C44-9W leads in total sales. Union Pacific (UP) helped vault the SD70M to the top of its group with its 1999 lease of 1,000 new models. They're using them to replace older models on a three for two basis. UP likes the continued, evolving enhancements of elements such as its fuel efficiency, computer systems and cab design, but the biggest advantage is its 96% reliability. Accompanying data sheets detail several dozen components and show production totals for the entire family for 2002-2003.
