HYDRAULICS IN THE UNITED STATES 1776-1976: SECOND INSTALLMENT. CHAPTERS 3,4, AND 5,

The work and achievements of the hydraulicians of the late 19th century are reviewed, the continuation of trends already established and the development of laboratories both large and small are noted, and comments are made on John R. Freeman's influence in this field. The work is discussed of engineers such as L.A. Pelton, 1829-1908, C. Herman, (1830- 1908), H.F. Mills (1836-1921), J.T. Fanning (1837-1911), A. Fetley (1837- 1903), C. Herschel (1842-1930), and others. Outstanding research in various laboratories is discussed as well as American textbooks and reference works for practicing engineers. John R. Freeman's contributions to this science are noted, the Freeman Scholarship awards are contributions to this science are noted, the Freeman Scholarship awards are listed, and careers of the early Freeman scholars are briefly reviewed.
