GRAVITY/ELASTICITY MODELS FOR THE PLANNING OF THE INTER-URBAN RAIL PASSENGER BUSINESS. IN: RAILWAYS
This paper attempts to develop econometric rail demand models to support the planning of service and investment strategies for inter-urban rail passenger service. The model is based on cross-sectional ticket sales data. Important issues relating to catchment areas and the generating and attracting potential of stations are addressed. The research also advances the representation within demand models of the issue of rail service quality when journey times vary across departures, and departures are not at equal intervals. The authors develop a model to determine the level of service quality dependent upon train journey times and departure times relative to the times at which travelers wish to depart. Significant and plausible influences on demand were estimated for fare, service quality, population and a range of socioeconomic variables. Directions for future research and model development are discussed.
