A method of overcoming the problem of shear cracks appearing in roads, caused by seasonal expansion and contraction movements, has been developed using a glass-fibre cement called fibrocem special mix 105. The material, composed of glass-fibre chopped strand dispersed in portland cement, is placed as a layer over a crack or joint before the asphalt laying stage. It prevents cracking by distributing the strain and so overcoming reflection cracking risks. Mix 105 has already been used on a number of repair and construction projects in the UK and overseas. /TRRL/
