EFFECT OF NOISE DECREASE OF TWIN LAYERED POROUS ASPHALT PAVEMENT
This paper describes how porous asphalt pavements have useful functions, such as improving driving safety in wet weather and reducing vehicle noise, with its special structure of numerous continuous voids. For improving safety on highways and reducing noise in urban areas, and because of these superior functions the application of porous asphalt pavement is rapidly increasing in Japan. Because of the situation in Japan where heavy-traffic roads pass through overpopulated cities, this noise reduction function is especially attractive and it is important to increase this effect. Based on this background, the authors have developed Two-Layered Porous Asphalt Pavement (henceforth, TWINLAY). Recently, newly constructed roads must comply with noise regulations on specific projects in Japan. TWINLAY has proved effective in those cases, with high durability and good noise reduction effect.
