MODIFIED ROLLING TO IMPROVE COMPACTION OF DENSE COATED MACADAM

The common practice of roller drivers leads to a characteristic initial variation in density of dense roadbase and basecourse macadam across the laid width. This variation persists even after many years of intense commercial traffic, so that the performance of the material is determined by its properties at the time of construction. For maximum economy good compaction in the wheel-path zones is essential. Results of three road trials show that modified rolling with a tandem roller can improve compaction considerably in these zones which determine road performance. /Author/TRRL/
