FATIGUE CRACKING IN STEEL BRIDGE PIERS AND ORTHOTROPIC STEEL DECKS OF TOKYO METROPOLITAN EXPRESSWAY
This paper describes how the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway is very important to the Tokyo area. Thirty years have passed since the first expressway opened and some deterioration has been found in the steel bridge structures. In Japan, the fatigue problem had not been considered in the bridge design process but many cracks have been found in steel member recently. This paper reports the state and cause of fatigue crack in steel piers and steel orthotropic decks in the expressway.
