GIS FOR TRAFFIC ACCIDENT APPLICATION IN UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA
Many highway agencies have been using GIS for analyzing accident data. Identification of problematic locations is one of the most important aspects of accident studies. The Geographic Information System based application combines the information collection capabilities of the current database along with the visualization afforded by a GIS. The Geographical Information System and Road Accident View System (GIS-RAV System) is a set of applications developed for managing accident database entries and is also able to retrieve process and analyze the pattern of accident graphically and thus apply the diagnosis rules in a more realistic and significance way. The system development is designed for the Universiti Putra Malaysia, in Serdang and may be adapted very easily to any other places. The system was developed using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 in Windows XP platform. The database is designed in term of textual format. The Accident Report from UPM security unit serves as the source for the information contained in the database. An added functionality provided by incorporating GIS is that the location of the accident is recorded on a map of each facility. By indication on a map, it allows the user to perform queries and readily ascertain where a particular condition exists that is contributing to the number of accidents occurring in that location.
