THE JOYS OF AUTOMOBILITY. IN: THE AUTOMOBILE
The paper argues that the real reason for the explosion of the automobile ownership is that the private automobile offers a better transport service than does any other mode. Automobiles are chosen because the auto-highway system is the culmination of the long and cumulative process of testing and improving ground transport technology. The paper further argues that the central transport task should be to redress the social inequities and to invent ways of extending auto-like transportation to those who are carless.
