EUROPEAN UNION ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION: A SUMMARY
The Kyoto commitments on climate change and the European Commission's 6th Environmental Action Program provided the key issues for European Union Environmental legislation and for the public transport industry. This paper provides a summary of the key issues, with the major emphasis on emissions from the transportation sector that have continued to increase. EU member states must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8% on 1990 levels in the period 2008-2012. Provided in the paper are the objectives, targets and policies set out by the various programs.
