TECHNOLOGY FOR PORT SECURITY
The article examines the U.S. Coast Guard response to port security concerns in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11. The new R & D Center program, the Captain of the Port Advanced Technologies Integration program, known as CATs-I is described. The purpose of the program is to evaluate advanced technologies to enhance the Coast Guard's port security capabilities and to improve COTP and the group level command centers. The following CATs-I technologies are investigated: Common situation display systems; protected voice communication systems; blue force tracking; exclusion zone barriers; trip wires; day/night surveillance; and port security system.
