SMART CARD TECHNOLOGY IN THE MARITIME TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY

With the continuing need to assess potential national security vulnerabilities in the post-September 11 world, the maritime industry is examining the possible uses of the smart card technology. International organizations such as the International Maritime Organization and the International Labor Organization are working on how to implement the technology to benefit the safety and efficiency of the global maritime industry. The article identifies several goals that would have to be reached to make it possible to move forward with a comprehensive program of smart card interoperability for the industry.
