CASE STUDY: CHARACTERIZATION OF FATAL OCCUPATIONS VERSUS NONOCCUPATIONAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISIONS IN KENTUCKY (1998-2000)

The purpose of this study was to characterize the factors associated with motor vehicle occupational fatalities in Kentucky compared to the state's nonoccupational motor vehicle fatalities. Also identified were workers and work situations at risk for a fatal motor vehicle collision (MVC) in order to target and develop prevention strategies. MVC data were analyzed from January 1998 to December 2000. Vehicle types, use of restraints, driver demographics, collision characteristics, human factors and roadway characteristics were analyzed for this comparison study. The study identifies truck drivers as being at increased risk for an occupational MVC fatality in Kentucky. Driver inattention/fatigue may increase the likelihood of a fatal MVC occurrence.
