THE NEED FOR VESSEL SECURITY OFFICER TRAINING
Today's ships are larger and they transport more passengers and greater quantities of high value and hazardous cargo than decades ago. Training programs have been developed to prepare crews in the safe handling of these ships. This article looks at the security training programs. Stowaways, drug smuggling, piracy and terrorism are some of the security issues facing shipping industry. Al Qaeda is known to have a formalized training program with a 90+ page training manual that targets the maritime industry and recruiting resources for future operations. The vessel security officers' training program is being developed with focus on four key areas: maritime, law enforcement, physical security, and threat assessment.
